In the midst of the early COVID-19 outbreak in March when the borders closed down across the world and traveling was heavily restricted, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) announced that all visas and Emirates IDs that expired before March 1 would be automatically extended until December 31.
This announcement was later revoked and replaced with a deadline of July 12 and then November 17. Last week, it was once again announced that the deadline would be extended to December 31, 2020. As of now, it is not clear whether this will be the final extension.
This extension applies to both residents and those with tourist visas that expired before March and have yet to leave the country. It gives people the opportunity to change their visa status, legalize their status or leave the country without facing any fines before the end of the year deadline.
It is important to note that unlike the previous amnesty schemes which required prior registration at designated centers, this time those with expired residency visas can go straight to the airport and fly out.
